Base System Installation Checklist:
[O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it

Initial boot worked: [O]
Configure network HW: [O]
Config network: [O]
Detect CD: [O]
Load installer modules: [O]
Detect hard drives: [O]
Partition hard drives: [E] Partitioner did not detect already existing software raid devices and install raid setup did not work. Had to enter raid setup and then use console 2 to create (an already existing) software raid md12 by issuing: mdadm --create --auto /dev/md12 -n 2 -l 0 /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part11 /dev/ide/host2/bus0/target0/lun0/part11 The partitioner then saw the raid device as RAID0 device #12 and I was able to mount it as /, format it and do a partial install.
Create file systems: [O]
Mount partitions: [O]
Install base system: [E] Last msg in console 3 was Setting up base-config (2.73). Last msg on screen before failure was "Configuring APT Source"
I looked at /target/etc/apt/sources.list in a shell and it looked ok. Dunno.
Install boot loader: [ ]
Reboot: [ ]

Comments/Problems:

Above pretty much says it all. I would like to see the partitioner see already existing software raid devices and show them when manual partitioning is selected. Also, would like to be able to address each Install Base System step individually when there is a problem. Might have been able to get past the Configuring APT Source (if that was the problem).

The /var/log/dpkg.log is huge, but the last few entries are:

We are closing this installation report for one of the following
reasons:
- it was reported with a pre-lenny version of Debian
  Installer.
- indications in the installation report give the feeling that
the reported problem waslying in another software, unrelated to
D-I, which we can't easily identify.
- indications in the installation report suggest that it may have been
fixed in a more recent version of a D-I component
- it was successful and we forgot closing it..:-)
- it has no information we consider useful

The D-I team is currently in the process of cleaning out the old spool
of installation reports that haven't bene processed yet.

In case you think that the problem you reported has chances to be
still present, please reiterate your installation test with
a more recent image of D-I, if you're in position of doing this.

You'll find daily builds at
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer. We recommend you choose
the netboot image, in the "daily builds section", then choose to
install "squeeze" when prompted.

If some problems are found, please report them with a new bug sent
against installation-reports.

Many thanks for your understanding and your help improving Debian,
past and present.
