Comments/Problems:
Existing M$-XPpro successfully restricted to 8GByte hda1, and hda5 created as
detailed above, by employing Partition Magic v8. Install appeared to go well,
apart from the NTFS not being detected as bootable by the Grub install (as
expected, having seen the beta4 errata); made mistake of letting Grub install
into the MBR.
That was last thing last night, after which I let the system shut itself
down. This morning, all I get on boot is:
----
GRUB Loading stage1.5.
GRUB loading, please wait...
(hangs)
----
I'm now stuck with a customer's system which won't boot for itself,
and no readily apparent way to reinstate the XPpro MBR: amongst other
things, M$'98 boot floppies silently hang, so does the XPpro dist CD,
and a DOS-6 floppy boots but doesn't understand the partition types,
but a Knoppix CD can see everything. Annoyingly, I went through the
above procedure on another system as a pre-install test, and
succeeded; differences include the HD being 80G, the processor an
Athlon, and the build boot cmd using "linux" rather than "linux26".
Apologies for not being able to preserve the evidence, but the system
in question is needed, and I'm under pressure of time here. I've had
to resort to asking Compusys to replace the HD, or give me a working
image on the existing HD, under warranty.
Have I been spectacularly stupid :-) ,
MaJoC

We are closing this installation report for one of the following
reasons:
- it was reported with a pre-lenny version of Debian
Installer.
- indications in the installation report give the feeling that
the reported problem waslying in another software, unrelated to
D-I, which we can't easily identify.
- indications in the installation report suggest that it may have been
fixed in a more recent version of a D-I component
- it was successful and we forgot closing it..:-)
- it has no information we consider useful
The D-I team is currently in the process of cleaning out the old spool
of installation reports that haven't bene processed yet.
In case you think that the problem you reported has chances to be
still present, please reiterate your installation test with
a more recent image of D-I, if you're in position of doing this.
You'll find daily builds at
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer. We recommend you choose
the netboot image, in the "daily builds section", then choose to
install "squeeze" when prompted.
If some problems are found, please report them with a new bug sent
against installation-reports.
Many thanks for your understanding and your help improving Debian,
past and present.
