Comments/Problems:

<Description of the install, in prose, and any thoughts, comments
      and ideas you had during the initial install.>

== Initial boot failed ==

I installed with / on LVM and it seems that due to #491203 the system
failed to boot. I managed to mount the / filesystem from the interrupted
initrd, chrooted into the installed system and made a small upgrade

(Note: ÎNNOIRE means UPGRADE, PĂSTRARE means KEEP)

[PĂSTRARE] linux-image-2.6-amd64
[ÎNNOIRE] acpi-support-base 0.109-3 -> 0.109-5
[ÎNNOIRE] console-common 0.7.77 -> 0.7.79
[ÎNNOIRE] console-data 2:1.07-3 -> 2:1.07-4
[ÎNNOIRE] initramfs-tools 0.92a -> 0.92e
[ÎNNOIRE] klibc-utils 1.5.9-2 -> 1.5.11-3
[ÎNNOIRE] libklibc 1.5.9-2 -> 1.5.11-3
[ÎNNOIRE] libldap-2.4-2 2.4.9-1 -> 2.4.10-2+lenny1
[ÎNNOIRE] lvm2 2.02.35-1 -> 2.02.38-1

Then the system booted by itself with the kernel from
linux-image-2.6.24-1-amd64 (2.6.24-7).

Still, I am unsure if the set up was complete, since the reboot after
the install was unsuccessful. Are my feelings founded?

== 2.6.25 kernel didn't boot - lilo workarounds ==

I opted not to upgade the kernel at that point, and that helped me
later, since with the new kernel (linux-image-2.6.25-2-amd64) I hit the
lilo bug #479607 (I reported this as #492918) which prevented lilo to
boot kernels with large initrds.

After I used the 'large-memory' workaround in lilo, the new kernel
booted, too.
Question: shouldn't lilo provide support for this issue (#479607) for
machines upgrading from etch, too?

== another possible workaround in initramfs-tools ==

I also saw that another workaround, using MODULES=dep in
/etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf, which seems to be very efficient at
reducing the initrd image size.

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=479607#96
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=479607#106

I didn't use this workaround yet, but I fear that some future kernel
would hit the limit lilo has even with large-memory.

Is there a reason why the MODULES=most is used and MODULES=dep can't be
used by default? Maybe if lilo is used (and a large image would result -
kernel >= 2.6.25) initrd should fallback to using MODULES=dep?
Am I missing something? Is MODULES=dep prone to failing?

== kill switched devices and their installation ==

This laptop has the following devices which can be kill switched:
- wifi lan card (iwl4965)
- bluetooth
- webcam (linux-uvc-source/linux-uvc-module)

Sice for neither of these no specific configuration was done, maybe it
would be useful to have a dialog (and a note in the installation guide)
to inform the user that (before the detection hardware phase) to turn on
all devices that are available so that proper support packages are
installed.

Could something be done to install the linux-uvc-module autoamatically,
if the detected webcam is compatible with the driver?

== Font issues in GDM and GNOME ==

After the installation, the default font in xorg (gdm and gnome) were
too thick (looks like they're either too big or bold) and in gdm part of
the glyphs are cut (the lower part of the glyphs look like they're
"hidden" behind the eit box. Also the small circles that are shown to
hide the password have about 10% of their height cut off.

Also, the default font in GNOME is too thick (compared to my Dell
Inspiron 6400's which has the same resolution). Although it kind of
makes sense that the glyphs are bigger since the screen is smaller, I
find it very annoying and looks like a bad finishing no have such
display/font issues.

Notes: this laptop has a 12" screen while the Dell to which I compare
has a 15.4" screen. Both have the same resolution 1280x800.

Is there a way to configure/force a certain DPI ratio, in spite of the
default font?

This problem wreaks of problems with themes that use pixel sizes in
combination with font sizes (which aren't specified in pixels).

== What to do about a badly configured hostname? ==

During the install I wasn't paying too much attention and I didn't set the hostname to the desired name 'heidi' and I left the default 'debian'. I know this is an user error, but I would like to fix this now. I changed the /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts files, but still, now for things such as the default email I get an address at debian.eddyp.homelinux.net.

Is there a way to fix this easily across the entire system?

We are closing this installation report for one of the following
reasons:
- it was reported with a pre-lenny version of Debian
  Installer.
- indications in the installation report give the feeling that
  the reported problem waslying in another software, unrelated to
  D-I, which we can't easily identify.
- indications in the installation report suggest that it may have been
  fixed in a more recent version of a D-I component
- it was successful and we forgot closing it..:-)
- it has no information we consider useful

The D-I team is currently in the process of cleaning out the old spool
of installation reports that haven't bene processed yet.

In case you think that the problem you reported has chances to be
still present, please reiterate your installation test with
a more recent image of D-I, if you're in position of doing this.

You'll find daily builds at
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer. We recommend you choose
the netboot image, in the "daily builds section", then choose to
install "squeeze" when prompted.

If some problems are found, please report them with a new bug sent
against installation-reports.

Many thanks for your understanding and your help improving Debian,
past and present.
