Machine: Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook E-6585 (Notebook  ATI M4 16MB)
Processor: Pentium 3 800Mhz
Memory: 512 MB D-RAM + 16 MB VRAM (ATI M4)
Root Device: IDE 20 GB Harddisk, /dev//hda
Root Size/partition table: /dev//hda1 = "/" 4 GB, /dev//hda2 = "swap" 1 GB, /dev//hda3 = "/home" = 14 GB

Comments/Problems:
 
Initial Install:
1) Wrong default keyboard: After English Language and Country Germany, the default Keyboard was US instead of Germany.  Language is a preference, Keyboards are more closely related to the geographic position than the language used.
 
2) Partitioning (non automatic) could be a bit friendlier.  It was not clear that the displays allowed navigation and selection (e.g. Mount Point).  I initially thought these were only informational displays and was not aware the options could be changed.  Perhaps sourround the options with square brackets (e.g. "Mount Point: [ /home  ]").
 
3) Please replace "OK" / "Cancel" buttons with "Next" / "Back" or "OK" / "Back one Step".  Cancel suggests that this step is skipped and I was afraid to press it...
 
After Reboot:
 
4) Mouse detection not automatic per default even though it is suggested in the text (the default is "No").
 
5) Screen detection not automatic per default even though it is suggested in the text (the default is "No").
 
Selected "ATI" in X-Windows at some point because my notebook has an ATI M4 chip.
 
6) Monitor signal input default is "Advanced".  Advanced should never be the default, it should be "Medium" (Note: no "Easy" setting available...)
 
7) uDeb dialog window tells me that uDebs are not active and I should reboot (or enter a cryptic command line).  What the hell is a uDeb?!  Suggestion: add a sentence that explains that a uDeb ist a "...".
 
After package install:
 
8) Mail config: Selected smarthost/no local mail
Exim config?  Why should exim run if I am using a desktop system?  Oh well...
Bug: no way to add username/password, just a cryptic message to read a /usr/share/doc/exim... readme. Yuck!
Suggestion: if I can enter a "smarthost" (perhaps "mail server" would be better) then I should be able to add authentification username/password as well.
 
9) Inital X-Window screen (I selected the ATI X-windows driver) is ok.  I want to reboot because of the "uDeb" message earlier.
Bug: it asks for a "Shutdown" password, which I never entered. 
Suggestion: This should either be allowed on a desktop configuration (without pasword) or it should refer to the admin or root password.
Note: after reboot, i could reboot from the gnome session without a password!?!
 
----------------- Inital install finished (two boots), further bugs/remarks:
 
Used "synaptic package manager" to install kernel 6.8.1-1-686 (no probs, one reboot, all is fine :-)
 
10) Bug: Proxy information from install is not put into gnome network config.
 
11) Bug: System install keyboard setting (German in my case) is not in Gnome config, inital setting is "US Keyboard".
 
12) Max resolution is 800x600, only program that lets me select resolutions allows only 640x480 and 800x600. 
Suggestion: Maybe the Gnome-system-tools should be part of the desktop package.

We are closing this installation report for one of the following
reasons:
- it was reported with a pre-lenny version of Debian
  Installer.
- indications in the installation report give the feeling that
  the reported problem waslying in another software, unrelated to
  D-I, which we can't easily identify.
- indications in the installation report suggest that it may have been
  fixed in a more recent version of a D-I component
- it was successful and we forgot closing it..:-)
- it has no information we consider useful


The D-I team is currently in the process of cleaning out the old spool
of installation reports that haven't bene processed yet. 

In case you think that the problem you reported has chances to be
still present, please reiterate your installation test with
a more recent image of D-I, if you're in position of doing this.

You'll find daily builds at
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer. We recommend you choose
the netboot image, in the "daily builds section", then choose to
install "squeeze" when prompted.

If some problems are found, please report them with a new bug sent
against installation-reports.

Many thanks for your understanding and your help improving Debian,
past and present.
