Package: installation-reports

Debian-installer-version: 2004-12-12
uname -a: didn't get that far
Date: 2004-12-17
Method: boot from cd rom (businesscard image)

Machine: IBM Netvista model 2194-18A
Processor: PIII
Memory: 378Mb
Root Device: IDE disk
Root Size/partition table: around 12Mb
Output of lspci and lspci -n: didn't get that far

Base System Installation Checklist:
[O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it

Initial boot worked: [0]
Configure network HW: [ ]
Config network: [ ]
Detect CD: [ ]
Load installer modules: [E]
Detect hard drives: [ ]
Partition hard drives: [ ]
Create file systems: [ ]
Mount partitions: [ ]
Install base system: [ ]
Install boot loader: [ ]
Reboot: [ ]

Comments/Problems:
The usual boot menu comes up fine. I choose "linux" and it races through
fine with a 2.4 kernel. I choose "linux26" and it goes fine until it
hangs trying to detect hardware. I swap to another session with
ctrl-alt-F2 and cat /var/log/syslog and the last messages are:
=============================
hw-detect: Detected module 'ide-generic' for 'Linux IDE support'
hw-detect: Trying to load module 'ide-generic'
kernel: SIS5513: IDE controller at PCI slot 0000:00:00.1
kernel: PCI: Assigned IRQ 14 for device 0000:00:00.1
hernel: SIS5513: chipset revision 208
hw-detect: Detected module 'ide-disk' for 'Linux ATA DISK'
hw-detect: Trying to load module 'ide-disk'
==========================================
That's where things hang. I've tried using a full sarge set of disks and
if I use linux26 it hangs. If I use expert and choose a 2.6 kernel it
installs but hangs on reboot. If I just settle for a 2.4 kernel things
are fine.

I'm happy to provide additional information and retry if it is a help.

We are closing this installation report for one of the following
reasons:
- it was reported with a pre-lenny version of Debian
  Installer.
- indications in the installation report give the feeling that
the reported problem waslying in another software, unrelated to
D-I, which we can't easily identify.
- indications in the installation report suggest that it may have been
fixed in a more recent version of a D-I component
- it was successful and we forgot closing it..:-)
- it has no information we consider useful

The D-I team is currently in the process of cleaning out the old spool
of installation reports that haven't bene processed yet.

In case you think that the problem you reported has chances to be
still present, please reiterate your installation test with
a more recent image of D-I, if you're in position of doing this.

You'll find daily builds at
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer. We recommend you choose
the netboot image, in the "daily builds section", then choose to
install "squeeze" when prompted.

If some problems are found, please report them with a new bug sent
against installation-reports.

Many thanks for your understanding and your help improving Debian,
past and present.
