This is a very old issue. I've seen it quite a few times before, but no 
idea what the cause is. The most likely candidate is busybox' shell.

That seems to be confirmed as I can reproduce the same effect 
after 'busybox sh' on an installed system.

So let's reassign it there. I'm setting the version to Lenny as I'm certain 
that's affected too.
