For me lenny installs just fine using the same version of debootstrap.
Can you reproduce the problem using the following command:
# debootstrap lenny lenny/ http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian
(using your own target dir and mirror)
If so, please send the debootstrap log (from the target directory).
Can you also reproduce if you use a different mirror?
If not, please either close the BR or reassign to pbuilder for further
investigation by its maintainer.

That sounds rather dramatic. I'd be very surprised if debootstrap itself is
causing that.
