That could then be "Please select the layout you intend to use on this
machine"....which entirely disconnects the choice from the hardwired keyboard.

You're right: sometimes users choose layouts that have nothign to do
with the layout that's printed on the physical keyboard (hint: Dvorak).

In order to avoid being too vague...or too detailed, we could then
mention something like "These often appear as an additionnal symbol
printed on the key".

This package is not meant for general use. It has several limitations:
no UTF-8 support, no possibility for users to choose the console font,
no multiple layout combinations and no support for AltGr for non Latin
keymaps.
