Comments/Problems:
I used the Installation Manual chapter 4 section 3 to prepare a USB pen
drive for installing Debian lenny. I downloaded the KDE CD1 iso, and put
it on the pen drive. The ISO md5sum verifies. The pen drive was made
bootable using hd-media images. While installing, I was told that the
ISO could not be found, and a full disk search was
offered. This too failed. When I put the ISO on the root of any
partition on the hard disk, it was found and install proceeded
correctly. I was able to diagnose and later solve the problem:
My /dev/hda5 is a vfat partition having many (upwards of 15) ISOs. They
are all present in a single directory in the root, so debian installer
did check them. Reading the syslog shows that the installer checks every
ISO for presence of "debianness". However, after checking a few ISOs, it
started failing. The error provided was "unable to mount iso XXX".
Because of this, the kde CD iso found on /dev/sda1 (my pen drive) also
failed to mount. No reason for failure of mounting of the ISOs was
given. I switched to vt2, and tried to manually mount a random ISO. The
error given at that time was "Cannot setup loop device: no such file or
directory".
To remedy the problem, I moved all the ISOs in /dev/hda5 to 3 level deep
directories. That way, they are not scanned on the first run. After
doing this, the install from USB stick proceeded smoothly. That leads me
to conclude that the installer "chokes" when it has too many ISOs to
check.
Unfortunately, I don't have the syslog of installer sessions which
failed, now that the system is installed. However, if need be, I can
again put the plenty of ISOs in root of /dev/hda5 and reproduce the
error.
