I suggest to change the sed expression to
"s!^GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=\"\?\([^\"]*\)\"\?!GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=\"\1 xyz\"!"
because in lenny we just have GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX= in /etc/defaul/grub
or does someone have a better one?
