I am trying to install on a ancrypted partition and I get similar error (wrong device number for root partition), but the device numbers are the other way round - /dev/root points to major 253 while the real device (crypt_sda2) is major 254. This is actually the second time I try to install this way and previously it failed somewhat differently.
