That is the wrong syntax. It should be 'modules=ppp-udeb'.
Wrong syntax, it was.  My failing eyesight, no doubt.

And if that's just a typo then I'm afraid "not detected properly" is not
really going to help us improve things...

Please provide a more detailed description of what was not detected and
any errors displayed or visible in the syslog.

not actually need pppoe and ppp-udeb at all, but that your router
provides the translation to regular Ethernet?

No router. The DSL modem from my telecom (Aliant in NS, Canada) has my pppoe connection information and provides a DHCP server and can be used that way.  It will also transparently pass a PPPOE connection through, allowing me to control ports that are not filtered. I have no access to the ports on the DSL modem, just a web interface for entering authentication data.

pppoeconf works like a charm, if that is any use.

Please file a separate bug report against the relevant X.Org package for
this issue (use xserver-xorg-core if you're unsure). This is outside the
scope of the installer itself. Please use 'reportbug' to submit that bug
so that all relevant info gets included.

I'm sure they have heard enough about legacy nVidia hardware.
