Package: debian-installer
Severity: normal

I just installed from a Debian testing netinstall with the "lenny beta2
release" of the installer:
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/lenny_di_beta2/i386/iso-cd/debian-LennyBeta2-i386-netinstall.iso

I chose "English" as language and the "United States" as country
(thought that effects the kind of English I'm gonna get).

Acutually I'm from Germany, but want a en_US system.

When I came to configuring the timezone, I could only choose among the
US timezones (Eastern, Mountain, Pacific, Alaska, ...).
There was no way to take "Central Europe/Berlin", which I wanted.

Imaging the case, that someone installes a computer, while beeing on
holiday in a different location. He probably wants to have the system
for the US, but at the moment, he wants the time like at the place he's
currently.

In any case ... the user should have the ability to choose any timezone
he wants. Please add an entry "other timezone" at the end of the list.

(btw: I filed this bug from an other system.)

Actually, it does not. The is not en_US "localization" for
D-I. Indeed, the English flavour that's used in D-I messages is more
US-style than UK-style.

Well, then we suggest you pick up English, then Germany (choose
"Other" in the country selection screen).

The country affects all localization, not only translation. This is
why the timezone is not freely choosable. We assume that, as long as
you did choose "United States", you're located inside the United
States (of America). Therefore, you only get choices for the US timezones.

If you choose Germany, you'll not even be prompted for a timezone as
Germany has only one timezone.

This has always been ruled out by the D-I team, indeed.

This suggestion comes back from time to time and we always conclude it
the same way: the chosen country determines the locale and
geographic-related settings (not only timezone, but default mirror as well).

We try to make it as clear as possible in the screens that allow you
to select a country. Choosing the country does not only determine the
language "flavour" (actually, it *never* does so as we don't want to
have variants for translations such as de_DE or de_CH) but also the
timezone and mirror settings.
