I didn't install the desktop task during the initial installation, so I don't think it can be solved in the installer. (I did install it after initial installation)

Theoretically there is already some infrastructure in place for that.
The gconf schema is installed using an alternative, so that the global
default is sudo if the correct alternative is set. The installer should
be setting it correctly if the desktop task is selected, AFAIK.
