Bug#477268: submit@bugs.debian.org

Hi!

Please keep the bug report in Cc. Please also note that I am just
trying to help here.

Yes I know, thankyou, I am just trying to point out an issue to help me and others.

Debian is a volunteer project, and owe you
nothing particularily.

hmmm, somewhat abrupt, english would not appear to be your native language......

I have been using Debian since 1998, I know the what Debian is. I have a great deal of respect for Debian and its team, no one surpases you all in quality.

Your problem seems unlikely to be directly in the installation software,
but more in the kernel, which is not something the debian-installer team
is directly responsible of.

Probably correct, for the megaraid driver, the cdrom issue I dont know.

Older kernels work, suggesting the bug has been introduced by adding a later megaraid driver!

Could you please look at #410817 [1] and see if that bug report match
your problems with the megaraid driver?

[1] http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=410817

This bug describes as not detecting the megaraid yet its seen....

8><----
"Feb 11 06:52:03 clap kernel: scsi0: scanning scsi channel 0 for logical drives. Feb 11 06:52:03 clap kernel: Vendor: MegaRAID Model: LD 0 RAID1 228G Rev: 6
.62"
8><----

For the 2.6.8 kernels I have tried it does not get this far, it fails slightly earlier, about here,

8><------

Feb 11 06:52:03 clap kernel: megaraid: channel[1] is raid.
Feb 11 06:52:03 clap kernel: megaraid: channel[2] is raid.
Feb 11 06:52:03 clap kernel: megaraid: channel[3] is raid.
Feb 11 06:52:03 clap kernel: scsi0 : LSI Logic MegaRAID 6.62 254 commands 16 tar
gs 7 chans 7 luns
8><------

For the 2.6.24-5 even earlier....

Debian is slowly making progress on releasing Etch+1/2 which will make a
newer kernel available to the stable release, supporting more hardware.
Lenny has 2.6.24-5, it does not work either....so you have a way to go....

When you say "does not work either" you are talking specifically about
megaraid support, right?

yes.

From this bug it looks to be a kernel module issue upstream...looks like I have to find an early megaraid module that works and patch that into a 2.6.x kernel, for me that will be hard going...

I will raise a new bug report or add to the one you have found, thanks.

The onboard controller is the same one for ports 1 to 6...yet only port 1 will install.

Is every port configured in the same way? No SATA (fake) RAID activated
or something similar in the BIOS?

No on auto, which is in ide emulation mode, I also set it to ide emulation manually, same success ie boots fine but only on port 1. The other 5 channels are now disabled to speed up boot, but that didnt seem to matter either.

When I went back to the sata dvd drive and port 1 on the ICH9R the cd detect went fine. However I then encountered a terminal issue with the Megaraid module so was unable to install etch.
What do you mean by a "terminal issue"?
I cannot install, the install dies/lockups.

Any error mesage available? (Hint: Alt+F4 show the installation log.)

Cheers,

No it locks up at 8%, ie the machine needs a off ~ on power reset.

regards

Steven
