Given that apparently nothing else supports your CD drive either and the
fact that this is _very_ old hardware for which few developers will be
willing to make any real effort to improve support, I'm afraid that there's
nothing much we can do. Because of that I also don't really think the
severity important is warranted.
It also seems that this is something of a known issue. See for example the
comments at the bottom of this page (second hit when I googled for "Adaptec
ISA SCSI syslinux"; this report was first...):

Hooking up an IDE CD drive to the system seems to me your best bet to me.
