Note that this is not actually a "fix", but more a workaround. By disabling 
ACPI you have probably also disabled quite a bit of functionality of your 
hardware, including power management.

The original problem was an issue in the Linux kernel. Your best option is 
to try more recent kernels than the 2.6.18 kernel included with Etch.
Please contact the debian-user mailing list if you need any help with that.
If the problem persists even with current kernels, your best option is to 
report a bug with the upstream kernel developers at bugzilla.kernel.org.
