That feedback is missing information, like the actual error message.
Back to the original problem:
Some distro does the hardware of this 1997 Thinkpad,
the Debian distrubution doesn't.
Notice:
This is not a Debian-Installer problem,
it is more a "wrong hardware" problem.
With booting the other distribution, which supports the hardware,
could reveal more information about the hardware.
And most likely, the name of the needed kernelmodule(s)
