Why? What exactly? IMO it is perfectly valid as an entry page for people
looking for current documentation. And it already was improved somewhat
fairly recently.

I don't think adding direct links to the development version of the manual
on _that_ page would be a good idea as general web pages should be about
the stable release by default and adding other links would only increase
clutter and confusion.

Note that [1] _does_ have a include to the development version, but I don't
think we really want to link there either (too detailed info).

Unfortunately you don't give any reasons _why_ you think so. Opinions
generally don't do anything to convince me, arguments can do.

I strongly disagree, at least for this purpose. Mostly because:
- I don't expect many users actually use the help pages anyway
- the home page already has easy, visible, direct links to both the
documentation page and direct to the stable manual, so making the
link point directly to ./doc does not add any real value over the
link to the home page (I _do_ expect Debian users to at least be able
to find a link named "Documentation" on a front page)
- for me that means that _if_ we want to change anything in the help
screens, we should provide *correct* direct links, not links to just
  another generic page

If you feel that the Documentation link is not prominent enough on the
Debian home page, I would suggest that you direct your energy to improving
that instead of trying to work around it on some obscure D-I help screen.

Yes, and IMO your proposed change does not really improve things for them.

Again only an opinion, no actual arguments.

For me, providing a better pointer to the development version of the manual
_does_ add value as that document can be quite a bit harder to find than
the manual for stable.
