i remember a discussion about this.
There are 2 postgresql available in etch: 7.4 and 8.1.

For upgrade matters, 7.4 was selected as default, because of the new
model added in etch, that permits several versions of postgresql to be
installed. So postgresql depends on 7.4.
In tasks it should have been postgresql-8.1 for that matter. But i
understand (of course) you don't have to do check it.
