It turns out it's an alps (I don't really know much about PC hardware).

I don't know if that's the installer's responsibility, or the xorg
package (but I suspect it's at least partly the installer's since the
isntaller did the hardware detection underlying the decision to
install the xorg synaptics module (and the ivtvdev driver)).
The important thing is that xserver should work *out of the box* when
installing debian, with no configuration on the user's part (including
reasonable pointer acceleration) .

X was broken in the default desktop install (with known problems).
Except that, the install was successful.
I have *always* had some trouble or the other to get X to work when
installing debian. But at least it's improving, with the xorg stuff.
