I would have been unable to use the net install features but for the fact that I had some ubuntu
disks around to snag the pppd from.

Otherwise seems to be relatively working (after I inhaled gdm/etc). Haven't been able to install
synaptic for some reason (claims that it can't satisfy libapt-pkg-libc6.3-5-3.3, even though apt
is already installed & apparently up-to-date!?!.

Comments/Problems:

When I hit function keys on CD bootup, menus
flashed several times.

Lack of detection for my network apparatus (usb EVDO modem) & lack of availability of pppd upon
completion would have made this less than useful for me if I didn't have the package in a ubuntu
distribution. (I think you should have more types available in your checklist, as it isn't
necessarily an 'error', but...)

Hi,

Sorry for not replying to your original report.

You don't say what type of CD image you used to install your system 
(businesscard, netinst or full CD/DVD) and it seems you are installing 
Sarge. The installer for Sarge is no longer being developed as the next 
release of Debian (Etch) is scheduled very soon.

I also have no idea what a EVDO modem exactly needs. Does that set up a 
PPPoE connection?

What you probably saw during the expert installation was the option to 
select ppp modules and the ppp-udeb. To be honest, I have no idea what 
those do in Sarge.
In general PPP (especially the old slow modem type) is not supported 
_during_ the installation, but packages needed to set up a PPP connection 
should be available on all CDs, except businesscard images (and that 
should be true for both Sarge and Etch).

The daily builds of the Etch installer also support using PPPoE during the 
installation, though this is fairly new and there may still be issues.
If you'd like to give that a try, download a *daily built image" (e.g. the 
netinst) from [1] and either install in expert mode and manually select 
the ppp-udeb, or boot the installer with "install modules=ppp-udeb".
As I said, no idea if that will help you for your EVDO modem, especially 
as I have no idea what kernel driver modules would be needed and if those 
are available.

I am closing this report as I don't see anything that needs action from 
our side. If you do decide to try the Etch installer, feel free to file a 
new report.
