I strongly doubt that this would be related to the frontend.

Charles: if you can still reproduce this, could you run partman after adding 
a 'set -x' at the top of /lib/partman/definitions.sh?

Note this file was very recently moved to /lib/partman//lib/base.sh. 
Depending on the image you use, you may have to add it there instead.
