Bug#379972: explaining the title

This bugreport, http://bugs.debian.org/379972
"don't default to attach the log files"
is a wishlist item to not include by default several files.

There is the technical reason for messages becoming too big.

For me is the human factor more important.

Those long installation reports provide me
a reason to delete installation reports that get to debian-boot@l.d.o.

Ploughing through the long messages of generated text is no fun,
it will reduce the amount of people who are willing to check
the installation reports.

That will get us, debian-installer team, only a few installation report
checkers. And frankly, I have the idea that only FJP has the energy to
go throught the reports.

I pick small installation reports to give Frans some slack
and to take my share of balancing the load.
But the long reports get me to disgust.

I think that small installation reports lower the threshold for
getting new contributors into the d-i team.

a Default of attaching various logfiles is wrong signal to new Linux
users[1] they might get the idea "throw many files to the community
and they will sort it out". When I do handling of installation reports
and ask for additional information, I'm implicit asking "Do _you_ care?"
Not getting additional information, means the user doesn't care.

I admit that asking for additional information does slowdown
the processing speed of bugreports.
I admit also that I don't care about that processing speed,
it is the better community I care about.
And yes, that means taking the long way.

Cheers
Geert Stappers

[1] Users of d-i are by definition new to Linux.
If we train then here to send blindy possible information,
they will do so at other projects.
