Don't know the answer to your question, but why don't you just use debconf to ask your questions? You'd need to create a small udeb with the templates and a postinst that asks them (or even just a /usr/lib/finish-install.d script). You can fetch the udeb in an early command and install it using udpkg. Cheers, FJP
