Comments/Problems:

This system runs various versions of Debian (R3) on a day to day basis
without any problems. (Pure Debian with multimedia kernel on /dev/hda6
for the past year, and Kubuntu on /dev/hda9 for the past week)

I wanted to install Etch on /dev/hda5 and chose to run in expert mode
(expertgui just froze). I manually partitioned the drives, because I
need to preserve my RAID setup and LVM on top of that.

Etch completely scrambled the way it presented the drives:
It relabelled the drives as follows (actual -> presented)
hde -> hda
hdg -> hdc
hda -> hde

Relevant bits of lspci

The Silicon Image controller is run in pure IDE mode, not RAID.

When I installed Kubuntu (6.0.6) a week ago, it also got it slightly wrong;
it presented the drives in the 'wrong order' ie Silicon Image
controller first, then the onboard nVidia, but it did preserve
the drive letters, ie it showed hde then hdg then hda.

Thoughts:
The latest installers are swapping the controllers, and Etch is
also (incorrectly) re-assigning the drive letters.

I then downloaded debian-31r6a-i386-netinst.iso and the partitioner
is OK on there, ie it preserved the controller order, and therefore
the drive order.
