I'm reassigning this bug to grub because there are no known problems with d-i installing grub, which is what the report was originally about (and the original reporter seems to have followed up saying that the install worked). So the only reason this bug is still open is due to the comments about needing to patch asmstub.c or compiling with -m32. I will leave it to the grub maintainers to follow up on that.. -- see shy jo
