Comments/Problems:
there are 3 problems:

1. (minor issue) USB-CD not recognized by default:
"Your installation CD-ROM couldn't be mounted..."
The CD-ROM it failed to mount is the one it was
booting from: a HP dvd940e writer attached via usb.

It works fine when booting with linux26. As long as
2.4 is the default
I'd suggest including some hint that linux26 might be
worth trying,
for those who haven't got a clue about kernel
versions.

2. Harddrive not recognized.
The drive was recognized normally when booting from
KNOPPIX 5.1:
search for sda in attached knoppix.dmesg.txt.
On the other hand with the debian installer the last
lines of syslog are:
kernel: SGI XFS with ACLs, security attributes,
realtime, large block numbers, no debug enabled
kernel: SGI XFS Quota Management subsystem

3. DHCP request failed.
The wireless adapter was switched off by hardware.
The ethernet card was connected to a DI-524 router via
network cable.
KNOPPIX 5.1 could establish an internet connection
although I can't
find messages about dhcp in any of /var/log/* (syslog
has size 0)
With the knoppix boot, `dmesg` mentions:

eth1394: eth0: IEEE-1394 IPv4 over 1394 Ethernet
(fw-host0)
# I think that's the internal wireless adapter
# ...
Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Driver - version 7.2.9-k4
Copyright (c) 1999-2006 Intel Corporation.
# ...
e1000: 0000:02:00.0: e1000_probe: (PCI
Express:2.5Gb/s:32-bit) 00:16:d3:23:a6:73
e1000: eth1: e1000_probe: Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network
Connection
# must be the wired ethernet card
# ...

The line starting "eth1394" appears in the dmesg for
the debian-installer
as well, but there it starts "ip1394". syslog contains
messages about
dhcp requests via eth0 which is obviously the wrong
interface.

Now follows knoppix.dmesg.txt. Since I can't access
the hard drive,
I can't provide a similarly detailed debian.dmesg.txt.

Please try the Etch RC2 release of the installer [1]. It is fairly certain
you will have a lot more success with that as the kernel used in the
Sarge installer is fairly old for your hardware.

Closing this report as issues with Sarge are to be expected with your
hardware.

Cheers,
FJP
