Severity: grave

As far as I can tell, the daily build network install CD for Debian/ppc 4.0
(etch) from 12-Feb-07 does not include the ibmveth module (ibm virtual
ethernet driver; i.e. CONFIG_IBMVETH). This affects anyone using POWER5
virtualization with virtual ethernet. It makes it impossible to do a network
install on a logical partition.

Boot the CD using 'expert64'
Select 'Execute a shell'
~ # modprobe ibmveth
FATAL: Module ibmveth not found.
~ # ifconfig eth0 up
SIOCGIFFLAGS: No such device

Please include the driver on the network install CD.

My earlier research turns out to have been wrong: ibmveth _is_ (and has
been for a very long time) included in powerpc64 kernel udebs.

This makes me suspect that you have just tried to load the module too
early in the installation process. For CD-based installations the module
will only become available _after_ the step "Loading additional installer
components". During this step the udeb nic-modules will be loaded which
contains the module.

Closing this report for now, but if you can show that the module really is
not there, feel free to reply to this mail and we will reopen it.

If you do, please provide the output of the following commands:
- uname -a
- sed -n "/Package: nic-modules/,/Version/p" /var/lib/dpkg/status
- find /lib/modules -name ibmveth*

Cheers,
FJP
