The wish to disclose the MAC address during installation doesn't make sense.
The Media Acces Controll address is Ethernet thingy close to the hardware.
Providing that address during installation is only usefull for a very
very small group of users. For all other users is the string with
hexadecimal character noise.
Using^WAbusing the installer for display the MAC address is IMNSHO plain
wrong.
Networkadministrators how do need the MAC address should check the actual
hardware, the documentation it came with or find another way like
switching console and using ifconfig.
