Bug#352973: Install: hang after Freeing unused kernel memory:

Hi there Frans,

We are trying the Etch CD now, having failed to boot with floppies... we once got as far as beginning to download from the net (to 15%) but didn't get that far again.

With Etch, we get as far as
Freeing unused kernel memory: 236k freed
NET: Registered protocol family 1

or, using >linux24
at
Setting up filesystem, please wait...
NET4: Unix domain sockets 1.0/SMP for Linux NET4.0

Restarting from the CD ROM is very temperamental (maybe the computer has had it!).

>linux noapic nolocalapic netcfg/disable_dhcp=true

NET: Registered protocol family 1
Segmentation fault

modprobe: failed to load module fan
insmod: cannot insert '/lib/modules/2.6.12-1-286/kernel/drivers/acpi/terhaml.ko': No such device (-1): No such device
modproble: failed to load module thermal
Starting system log daemon: syslogd, klogd.
[hang]

Thanks again,
Helen

There's a few things you could try.

Instead of just pressing <enter> at the boot prompt, try entering:
- install noapic nolocalapic

This should be 'noapic nolapic'

- install acpi=off
- install24
- install24 noapic nolocalapic

Same here.

Did you try the Etch Beta1 CD? In that case you could also give a daily
built CD [1] a try. Again, try both the default install and the options
above.

Forgot the link for the daily images:
