Package: base-config
Severity: important
Hi,
Base-config should set up a getty on a serial console if the install was
done on a serial console. This is easy; make sure a line like
T0:23:respawn:/sbin/getty -L ttyS0 9600 vt102
is added to /etc/inittab if we're working on a serial console. Such a
line is already present as an example in /etc/inittab; it's just that it
should be uncommented. The configured speed isn't actually important as
the kernel takes care of that (just have to make sure it isn't faster
than the actual terminal's speed); but without this line, a
serial-console-only architecture (such as m68k VME, which is where this
bit me) will install to a full booting system that cannot be used
because there's no way to login.
Especially in combination with the fact that aptitude doesn't work
properly on serial consoles (just filed a separate bug on that one),
this might bite a lot of people.

Fixing this. This bug report should probably have been merged earlier, but in
any case the issue should be closed, both for Wouter and for the IBM hardware.
Friendly,
Sven Luther
