Comments/Problems:

The sections marked with the * above experienced severe slowdown.  Install was normal up until about halfway through detecting the cdrom.   Then the system appeared to freeze up.  I started to think it had crashed but after about ten minutes it finished with the cdrom detection.  Similar kind of effects during detecting hard drives and installing the base system.  During the base system install the cdrom kept spinning up and spinning down and making some strange noises.  In any case the installer eventually finished without any error messages.  The installation is just fine now.

This system has two cdrom drives:
/dev/hdd
/dev/sg0
The installation was done from the IDE cdrom because thats the one that is bootable from my BIOS.  I did notice the SCSI activity light was flickering a lot more than normal while the installer was trying to read from the IDE cdrom.  This could have had something to do with the slowdown.

The SCSI cdrom drive is the only thing that is really unusual about this syste.  There is also an ISA soundblaster AWE32 card in the system.  The kernel doesn't even notice it so I'm sure that had nothing to do with it.
