Without the syslog is very difficult to us guess what happened. Even
with it, we can need to ask you to change the grub-installer postinst
verboseness to allow us to catch something.

Did you try to use a full-cd for installation? It could be better for
you so you won't need to grab the packages from the net ever and ever
again ;-)
