Frans, notice that yaird is still the prefered option for prep machines, as
initramfs-tools still is unable to detect the root partition per default.

Another solution would be to set the ROOT= variable in
/etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf (or whatever the conf file is named), to
make sure the ramdisk knows about the ROOT to boot from.

This would have to be done after initramfs-tools is installed, but before the
kernel is installed (or at least configured), so inside base-installer.

Ideally, initramfs-tools should do a ROOT=probe (like on yaird and
initrd-tools), and allow a command line override of the root= option, but this
is something i see the initramfs-tools guys to be very recalcitrant with.
