To diagnose this problem further, I downloaded gdb with wget, but
instead of installing it with dpkg, I unpacked it with ar and then
untar'd data.tar.gz to /target. I then chroot'd to /target and ran
apt-get with gdb. Here is a full output:

Unless anybody can come up with any other ideas or suggestions, my next
