Could you please provide the errors that were provided by X when it failed
to start and also the /etc/X11/Xorg.conf file?

Setting the VESA card driver and a 1024 resolution would certainly be
possible by manually editing the /etc/X11/Xorg.conf file but it would be
nice to find out why it isn't autodetected properly.

Do you know which model your graphics card is?
