Bug#395960: installation report: success amd64

Package: installation-reports

Boot method: USB stick
Image version: all downloaded on Oct 27 starting 8:00 EDT,
		finished around 1800:
	hd-media:
		http://people.debian.org/~kroeckx/d-i/images/daily/ \
			hd-media/boot.img.gz
	iso:
		ftp://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/ \
			arch-latest/amd64/iso-cd/ \
			debian-testing-amd64-netinst.iso

downloaded over slow and unreliable ppp phone link via
	 wget -t 0 --read-timeout=60 -c -i wget.lst
	while link kept up with:
		watch -n 30 "pon internet; ifconfig ppp1; from -c"

	MD5SUMS verified.

USB is Kingston DataTraveler 2.0 GB. Boot image made using
manual method from install manual. However, since I want the
syslinux.cfg and the boot help screens, I use the boot.img.gz
file, unzip it, mount it via loop and copy the files over.

Don't have a functioning computer that can run the CD burner or
do USB; sneakernet with 100 MB zip disk. Boot the new computer
with a RIP linux that can read a 100 MB zip disk and the USB and
use this system to make the USB stick.

Comments/Problems:

During partioning, first setup /boot on the first raid1 partition.
After that, when returned to the partioning screen from other options
(eg setting up lvm), the /boot partition wasn't set up. Had to set it
up last before saying done and going on.

Would like some descriptions or other help in choosing which kernel to
install:
	linux-image-2.6-amd64-generic (default)
	linux-image-2.6.17-2amd64
	linux-image-2.6-amd64

Install boot loader: chose grub.
it didn't install, no errors listed in syslog. strange.
	rebooted install USB, rescue mode,
		chose install grub
			/dev/sda OK
			/dev/sdb OK
since in raid1, may as well have grub on
				both.

Rebooted from there OK.

The only glitch I had wasn't d-i fault at all. My linksys switch wan't
letting traffic through from the new machine to the 486. Had to shut
both down and repower. Of couse, this meant that I couldn't use a
mirror during the install, but who cares? After reboot, I edited the
/etc/apt/sources.list, started aptitude, update. Its getting the
packages file now

Great installer. The netisnt without the network took about 20 minutes
start to finish.

My previous attempt used the business card iso file and I submitted a
report for that failed attempt. Over a slow phone line the netinst is
much better.

One suggestion then. Would it be possible for the hd-media boot method
to have an option of downloading the iso file to the usb stick from
within d-i? This would have saved me sneakernetting an iso file bigger
than a zip disk. If it used wget -c, it could be interrupted and
continued later, something I wished the businesscard iso had allowed.
Once the netinst iso is used, the install is so fast there's no need to
pause and resume.

I've often wondered why the businesscard iso doesn't use this approach
instead of fetching the base packages on-the-fly since if something dies
the whole downloading time is wasted whereas by downloading the netinst
iso its there for the next time.

Thank you all for a great installer and for the help I received prior to
the install in designing the new system (my first since my 486).

Doug.
