There are no images supporting 64 bit install in this location. If you
really want a 64 bit install, you should download an image for the amd64
architecture.

I suspect it does not really crash, but just displays an error message
that it cannot find kernel module udebs corresponding to your kernel,
correct?

What exact image did you download? I tried with the netinst image from
that location, but cannot reproduce your error.

How did you boot the installer? With the default 2.4.27 kernel or with the
2.6.8 kernel?

Please switch to VT2 (using alt-F2) when the error occurs and give the
output of 'uname -a'.

If your system has a SATA disk controller, you probably do not want to
install Sarge as the kernels available for Sarge have only very limited
SATA support. I'd suggest you try installing Etch instead [1].
