I'm using a german (qwertz) Logitech Cordless iTouch keyboard on a PS/2 port. I selected german on all three accounts (language, location, keyboard) in the installer process. Both passwords, root and 1st user, ended on "##" (w/o quotes), so you seem to be spot on. Unfortunatly i didn't try any password without special characters, but i will install another Etch on the weekend and i will try the g-i with a mixture of plain passwords and some with special characters and report if i notice a pattern.

Well, then that's probably the problem.

Just try entering your passwords in a field where you can see what's
displayed, for instance, the system name input dialog box, at the
beginning of the install. You'll see that the "#" characters are not
inputted (dunno where they are on a german keyboard). There are also
problemns with capitalized letters (already reported).

Alright!

Here's the xev output, i hope that helps to identify the problem. Keep up the good work!

KeyPress event, serial 29, synthetic NO, window 0x1c00001,
    root 0x64, subw 0x0, time 42873815, (419,99), root:(431,170),
    state 0x0, keycode 51 (keysym 0x23, numbersign), same_screen YES,
    XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (23) "#"
    XmbLookupString gives 1 bytes: (23) "#"
    XFilterEvent returns: False

KeyRelease event, serial 29, synthetic NO, window 0x1c00001,
    root 0x64, subw 0x0, time 42873965, (419,99), root:(431,170),
    state 0x0, keycode 51 (keysym 0x23, numbersign), same_screen YES,
    XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (23) "#"

bjorn, could you try running the GTKDFB 2.9-based udeb [1] like this

-boot with "install DEBIAN_FRONTEND=newt"

Then, switch to VT2 and type

-export DEBIAN_FRONTEND=gtk
-debconf -f gtk -o d-i /usr/bin/main-menu

and see if the problem is still here?
