No worries mate!
It did took me a month to find out that d-i for amd64 was not build.
I have no clue how many people made the same mistake,
meanwhile it is visable at http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/Today
( dated april 9th ) With some luck it will now be noticed.

Good question.
IMO is the problem that it is not visible what is going on.

to help making visisble what is done and what is needed (beside patience)
Start building d-i as documented
on http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/Build and update
