After more investigation, my current conclusion is that this bug is actually a kbd-chooser bug. It seems that the keymap it loads is not loaded in unicode mode. This is confirmed by bug #364638 which originated this bug. When entering a French "é", it is outputted as "<E9>" while the console is running in UTF-8 mode Actually, this bug raises a more general concern about kbd-chooser: it currently embarks some code originating from console-tools, but stripped down for D-I purposes. This is not really the current policy in D-I and this makes kbd-chooser quite complicated to hack down. A more long-term plan would be rewriting it in shell and use the "normal" utilities from either console-tools or kbd to load the keymap. I CC this to people I know are involved in console handling stuff: guys, something *really* needs to be done about kbd-chooser in geenral. We are now 6 months ahead from a release. Time to have something working well for console handling! --
