We have discussed this at today's D-I development IRC meeting and the
consensus is that this is not a realistic target for Etch.

The impact this has is too big and we have to start thinking of slowing
down development so we will have a stable and well-tested installer for
Etch, rather than making major changes.

The main objection is that adding AMD64 stuff on netinst and full CDs is
going to increase the size of the i386 netinst over the limit we try to
keep it and will likely push packages needed for tasks off CD1.
(And we already have the integration of the graphical installer that we
need to tackle.)

However, we have no objection to accepting patches in individual
components that will ease the way for others to create such images,
provided of course these patches are not too invasive and have been
properly tested before being submitted.

Sorry to have to disappoint you.

Cheers,
Frans Pop

P.S. There should also be a log and summary of the meeting available
within the next days/week on:
