Bug#364546: Debian Installer Manual: hardware.po

Package: debian-installer manual
Version:
Severity: minor
Tags: l10n, patch

I have just translated the hardware.po section of the manual. While doing so, I noticed the following typos or errors, which I thought you might like to clear up before release.

I'm not sure if the above tags will work for this report, if i have them correctly, so have sent a copy to you, Frans. I hope that's OK.

Sorry it's taken me so long to find time to continue working on the Manual. I hope I can get it done before release, if that is still useful.

Original: ⌘0 Serial console is available on all supported DECstations (9600 bps, 8N1). For using serial console, you have to boot the installer image with the <literal>console=ttyS</ literal><replaceable>x</replaceable> kernel parameter (with <replaceable>x</replaceable> being the number of the serial port you have your terminal connected to — usually <literal>2</literal>, but <literal>0</literal> for the Personal DECstations). Original: ⌘0 Most systems use this kernel flavour, which supports the PowerPC 601, 603, 604, 740, 750, and 7400 processors. All Apple Power Macintosh systems up to and including the G4 use one of these processors.

- systems
+ machines
OR
+ processor configurations

The G4 is not a system: it is the type of processor configuration, and therefore is usually used to identify the machine. My laptop is an iBook G4, that's họw it is classified, based on the overall hardware config, and on the processor config. powering the machine. When I look at About This Mac in my Apple menu, it ignores the hardware config entirely and simply says "Processor: PowerMac 1.2 GHz G4". (More detailed hardware config is available via "More Info...".)

I would also strongly recommend you change "Macintosh" to "Mac" or "Apple Mac" throughout your documentation. No Mac user calls it the Macintosh, and Apple certainly doesn't. "What are you running?" "I've got a Mac." My Apple menu says "About This Mac", not "About This Macintosh", and our help documentation is called "Mac Help", not "Macintosh Help".

The word Macintosh is also more confusing for readers of other languages, too, since it's a difficult word to work out, not structured as will make sense in many languages. Combined consonant sounds are difficult for speakers of many languages.

Original: ⌘0 Macintosh computers using the 680x0 series of processors are not in the PowerPC family but are instead m68k machines. Those models start with <quote>Mac II</quote> or have a 3- digit model number such as Centris 650 or Quadra 950. Apple's pre- iMac PowerPC model numbers have four digits.

You're forgetting the LC models. I had a LCIII, which was a 68030. The LCs came between the Mac II and the Quadra. I later had a Quadra, which was a 68040.

- Those models start with <quote>Mac II</quote> or have a 3-digit model number such as Centris 650 or Quadra 950. + Those models start with <quote>Mac II</quote> series, go on to the <quote>LC</quote> family, then the Centris series, and culminate in the Quadras. These models usually have a Roman numeral or 3-digit model number such as Mac IIcx, LCIII or Quadra 950. This group of machines also includes the laptops Mac Portable, Powerbook models 100-190cs and Powerbook Duo models 210-280c.

This model range started with the Mac II (Mac II, IIx, IIcx, IIci, IIsi, IIvi, IIvx, IIfx), then the LC (LC, LCII, III, III+, 475, 520, 550, 575, 580, 630), then the Mac TV, then the Centris (610, 650, 660AV), the Quadra (605, 610, 630, 650, 660AV, 700, 800, 840AV, 900, 950), and finally the Performa 200-640CD, an excellent line of machines. Very reliable, robust and capable.

In laptops, it started with the Mac Portable, then the PowerBook 100-190cs and the PowerBook Duo 210-550c (excluding PowerBook 500 which is Nubus, please see the section below).

Please feel free to use this information. It is correct and comprehensive, which will help users with different models of machines. You can refer to MacTracker, or any of the Mac information sites.

NuBus systems are not currently supported by debian/powerpc. The monolithic Linux/PPC kernel architecture does not have support for these machines; instead, one must use the MkLinux Mach microkernel, which Debian does not yet support. These include the following: <itemizedlist> <listitem><para> Power Macintosh 6100, 7100, 8100 </ para></listitem> <listitem><para> Performa 5200, 6200, 6300 </para></ listitem> <listitem><para> Powerbook 1400, 2300, and 5300 </para></ listitem> <listitem><para> Workgroup Server 6150, 8150, 9150 </para></ listitem> </itemizedlist> A linux kernel for these machines and limited support is available at <ulink url=\"http://nubus- pmac.sourceforge.net/\"></ulink>

It's probably not a bad thing that you have a Mac devotée translating these strings. ;)

The NuBus Macs have he 603 and 604 processors: the Power Mac 4400-9600, the Twentieth Anniversary Mac, the Performa 5200CD-6420 and the laptops PowerBook Duo 2300c/100, Powerbook 500, and PowerBooks 1400-5300. Original: ⌘0 Multi-processor support — also called <quote>symmetric multi-processing</quote> or SMP — is supported for this architecture. The standard Debian &release; kernel image was compiled with SMP support. This should not prevent installation, since the SMP kernel should boot on non-SMP systems; the kernel will simply cause a bit more overhead.
