Check /proc/cpuinfo

If you see two CPUs there, then it is working.

The kernel you should be using should be a 686-smp kernel of course.

dmesg or /var/log/kern.log should also show it initializing each cpu, or
sometimes a reason why it isn't doing so.

Did you install 2.4.27 or 2.6.8 kernel?
