Comments/Problems:

the boot params were:

linux26 hw-detect/start_pcmcia=false vga=771

The Hard Drive of the Sony-Vaio-VGN-S5XP is a Fujitsu MHV2100B, which uses a
SATA driver.

It seems that the sata driver names the hard disk as /dev/sda

There is no conflict with the cdrom, since it is a matsushita IDE, and it is
named as /dev/hda.

The installer is able to recognize the CDROM and read the modules and so on,
however, it is not able to find the hard disk (it says that there is no disk
to partition).

I have read something saying that it is a matter of changing the fstab, but I
think that at this stage of the installer (finding the HD and partitioning
it) the fstab is not relevant.

I was able to boot from a knoppix live CD (Knoppix v_3.8.1-2005-04-08, which
has a 2.6 kernel) and got some info about the system from the 'proc'
directory

some info from 'dmesg'
