Ah, okay.  I was using the standard package from Debian, not the udeb.

Okay, so I guess the _real_ problem (really this time ;) is this: if
you have a USB brltty device, why does plugging it in not load the USB
modules?  I assume it does, but that you try to mount usbfs even when
a non-USB brltty device is used and then obviously you cannot assume
that the USB modules are loaded.

Please note that all I'm saying is without knowing brltty at all.
However, my assumption is that you're doing something wrong, such as
assuming usb modules are loaded when you have a non-usb brltty device.

So:
 - do you actually use a USB brltty device?
 - is it plugged in by the time you start brltty?

usbfs is.  usbdevfs was renamed to usbfs...
