Debian CDs gave my machine a kernel panic so I had to switch to Ubuntu, despite the fact
that I would rather run pure debian.

Comments/Problems:
Though Ubuntu uses the debian installer, the whole process is much better than debian's. Ubuntu has made installing linux easy and this is a valuable goal. Debian should work harder on developing the OS so
that installation is easier and distribution releases are more stable. Too much energy is wasted on arcane
processor types for a focused distribution.
Install logs and other status info is available in /var/log/debian-installer/.

Thank you for your comments.
The main difference between the Debian and Ubuntu installer relevant for=20
your experiences is in the kernel version used and some kernel=20
configuration choices. There is no real structural difference between the=20
two installers.
As these differences and their impact on installs on recent Dell hardware=20
are well known, I'm closing your report.
Cheers,
=46JP
