etch is testing, and testing has already changed a lot since the
release of Debian 3.1 (sarge), so we can't guarantee that the
installer for sarge will work flawlessly for etch.

In general, the standard way of installing testing is to install
stable first and then upgrade to testing. Try that, and the install
process will probably work much better.

If this is not clear enough from the documentation you got, maybe such
documentation should be fixed.
