Bug#289843: installation-reports: Installer hangs at 30-35% when formatting SATA drive with extfs3

Package: installation-reports

Debian-installer-version: 2005-01-09
uname -a: N/A
Date: 2005-01-10
Method: <How did you install? What did you boot off? If network
      install, from where? Proxied?>
Burnt Installer to CD, booted from CD, chose country keyboard etc,
proceeded to disc configuration, chose default (All files in one
partition) and when writing changes to disc, formatting starts but hangs
between 30% and 35%.

Machine: Home build
Processor: AMD64 3000
Memory: 1GB (2x512) PC3200
Root Device: Maxtor 80GB SATA 6Y080M0
Root Size/partition table: As Debian Installer Default (ca 76mb root, rest
swap ?)
Output of lspci and lspci -n: N/A

Comments/Problems:
Running the installer in linux26 mode.
Motherboard is Foxconn 755A01-6EKRS AMD Athlon 64 Motherboard, with SiS755
northbridge and SiS964 Southbridge. Installer boots up and seems to detect
all hardware just perfectly. When formatting of / to extfs starts it
proceeds very rapidly until about 30% when it slows down and finally stops
at around 35% - nothing happens for several minutes at this stage.
I've tried different flags, like noapci etc.
If I run the installer in "plain mode" (i.e not linux26) I received a
core-dump (sorry, can't remember exact location)
I also tried disabling power-management options in the BIOS.
Found this today: http://wiki.debian.net/index.cgi?DebianInstallerFAQ
question 8, will try to enable "Native mode" or "Compatibility mode" later
on tonight. Will report success/failure.

Thanks!
